UNION COUNTY, N.C. – An Indian Trail man is in jail after deputies say he severely beat his 10-week-old son to the point of breaking multiple bones.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union County EMS responded to a call in the 700 block of Picketts Circle in Indian Trail Thursday around noon. Emergency dispatchers were told about an infant that was having difficulty breathing. While treating the child, deputies say that paramedics realized the child’s injuries were consistent with those of an abused child.
Law enforcement officials and DSS workers were called to the scene and launched an investigation. The child was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Union, but was transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital and remains in critical condition, according to police.
Deputies charged Kyle Thomas Bendick, 25, with two counts of felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. Officials say the child suffered multiple fractures over two weeks ago, as well as other serious injuries. Deputies said the child was left alone with Bendick while his mother was at work.
Bendick is being held under a $1 million bond.
