Union Co. paid over $500 in ransom for 2014 cyber attack

UNION COUNTY, N.C. – Union County officials confirmed that the county experienced a cyber attack in 2014 and that county leaders paid hackers over $500 in ransom to recover the files. 

Union County leaders said the ransomware attack impacted the Tax Appraisal Division and leaders chose to pay $580.74 recover the information. Officials said no Union County residents’ personal information was compromised during the attack. 

Local police and the FBI were notified of the attack, officials said.
