Victim of hit and run dies from injuries, driver charged

The woman hit while crossing a street in South End in March died Monday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A pedestrian struck by a car during a hit and run in March died from her injuries Monday.

CMPD officers say they found 31-year-old Jessica Nicole Morrell lying unresponsive in the roadway on March 4.

The incident occurred on South Tryon Street near the intersection of Bland Street around 9:12 p.m. Morrell was taken to the hospital by emergency services with life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses described the incident to authorities, saying a silver Dodge Avenger struck Morrell as she was crossing the crosswalk during a red light. The driver didn't stop after striking Morrell, CMPD said.

The following day, 25-year-old Jeffery Jay Junior Laforce turned himself into authorities saying he was the driver of the vehicle. He was arrested and charged with Felony Hit and Run.

Morrell succumbed to her injuries from the hit and run around 1 p.m. Monday. CMPD says detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Laforce with involuntary manslaughter.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Oberer at 704-432-2169.
