WILMINGTON, N.C. -- A 6-year-old Wilmington girl has been found after an Amber Alert was issued.
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office says Stefanny Lenneth Lopez-Castro was found Thursday morning about two miles from her home, where she was taken.
Deputies say she was found chained to a tree in a wooded area.
According to family friends, Lopez-Castro was taken to the hospital. She is alive, but it is unclear whether she is harmed or injured.
Authorities have arrested 46-year-old Douglas Edwards of Wilmington.
He has been charged with first-degree kidnapping. They say Edwards was under surveillance overnight and taken into custody this morning.
Edwards court appearance is Friday.
Sheriff Edward McMahon thanked the community for their help in "beating the odds."
"I've got a granddaughter that age. It's personal when this is in our community and this kind of story doesn't normally happen, so this is just very personal, and it should be to everybody," McMahon said. "The community should be very proud of what happened in the last 15 hours or so with everybody working together."
