Woman accused of kidnapping, robbing daughter 'to teach her a lesson' sentenced

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Lincolnton woman was sentenced to at least five years in prison Friday in connection with the 2015 robbery and kidnapping of her then-teenage daughter.

According to court documents, Debra Ann Matney, 41, was sentenced to five to seven years after pleading guilty to first-degree burglary, felony conspiracy, second-degree kidnapping, and common law robbery in Catawba County Court Thursday.

Prosecutors say that on August 19, 2015, Matney and four others kidnapped her 18-year-old daughter, covered her face, and drove her to multiple locations to withdraw cash using the teen’s debit card. The victim identified Matney as a suspect after hearing her voice during the encounter.

According to investigators, Matney made a statement to police that she was "trying to teach her daughter a lesson."

A second suspect in the case has pleaded guilty and is serving a prison sentence, according to officials.
