Woman sentenced to years in prison after shaking baby, days after twin brother died

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. -- A Connelly Springs woman was given a prison sentence of six to eight years after pleading guilty to attempted felony child abuse, the 25 District Attorney's office says.

The Honorable Daniel A. Kuehnert, Superior Court Judge from Burke County, issued the prison sentence for 25-year-old Brittany Nichole Hefner Thursday after her plea.

According to the D.A., Hefner will serve her sentence at the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.

Hefner was charged after injuries were discovered on her 3-month-old infant while police were investigating the death of the child's twin brother.

Burke County emergency services responded on January 31 to a call regarding a child that was not breathing.

The 3-month-old was hospitalized at Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem but died from injuries that investigators say were inflicted from abuse, allegedly from the child's father, 21-year-old Nicholas Brandon Clark.

Clark has pending charges for murder and felony child abuse.

The twin brother of the 3-month-old was also transported to the hospital for evaluation. Police say injuries were found consistent to a child being shaken.

Hefner admitted to shaking the surviving child two days earlier, leading to her arrest and guilty plea.
