Cyber Monday tips: Deals and warnings

One more day to grab some great cyber deals.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- More than 122 million Americans plan to shop online on Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation.

Founder of PocketYourDollars.com Carrie Rocha said despite weekend sales, some online retailers will offer their deepest discounts on Cyber Monday. Some of those sales started Sunday.

"I think one of the questions people have is, 'Do I need to keep paying attention or can we be done with all of the shopping hype?' And no, there's one more day to still pay attention to," Rocha said.

A National Retail Federation survey found that about 23 percent of consumers plan to shop for Cyber Monday deals on their mobile device.

"This year is the year of the retailer app. So an increasing number of consumers have downloaded apps for their favorite retailers and are making their purchases through that," Rocha said.

Many major retailers are offering free shipping, while Target kicked off Cyber Week by offering an extra 15 percent off almost anything in store and online for Sunday and Monday.

Mike McNamara, chief information and digital officer of Target, said in a press release, "We're giving guests a compelling opportunity to save 15 percent across Target's broad assortment, plus the flexibility to shop the offer for two days in a way that's most convenient to them – whether they want to shop online or in a store."

Rocha added, "So that's kind of a first and I'm interested to see then next year if any other retailers follow suit."

The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota is reminding shoppers about ways they can protect themselves while shopping online.

Before paying, look at the URL. The "s" in https:// lets you know the site is secure, as well as the lock symbol. Also, pay with a credit card to offer yourself the most protection. The BBB also recommends keeping documentation of your order and updating your computer's spam filters, anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
