FORT MYERS, FL -- (WBBH) A Punta Gorda, Florida man has been charged with stealing a car and taking his kids along for the ride.
Lee County deputies arrested Michael McMikel, 32, for the crime.
It started when McMikel brought his own car into Custom Tire and Auto in North Fort Myers, asking for an oil change.
Rich Jarvis has owned and operated Custom Tire and Auto for 35 years. He said when a customer's car is finished, they park it in front of the door, running and with the air conditioning blowing. He said that's never been a problem, until Tuesday morning.
"It's just a very unusual thing to happen," said Jarvis.
He spent part of Tuesday morning talking to a new customer, Scott Wellnitz, who brought his car in for a battery problem.
"My experience there was awesome," said Wellnitz. His car was fixed, and Wellnitz paid his bill.
Employees at the shop brought his car around, like always, leaving it running with the AC on.
"As I was walking out the door, I saw a guy with two kids in the back of my car," said Wellnitz, "Driving away with my car."
Just a few blocks down the road, a deputy pulled McMikel over in the parking lot of J. Colin English Elementary. The school went on lockdown for about 10 minutes.
McMikel was arrested and told deputies he only wanted to talk to the D.E.A. and that someone from the Charlotte County Sheriffs Office told him to steal it.
