CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The uptown Fourth of July celebration was the city's last extraordinary event before the Democratic National Convention in September.

CMPD would not say exactly how it was using the holiday to prepare, but officers did note the event gave them extra practice.

Not all of the ordinance regulations were strictly upheld. Police did not prevent people from wearing backpacks or carrying coolers, unless they were exhibiting other suspicious behavior.

An estimated 100,000 people visited uptown for the holiday celebrations.

For the most part, officers told Newschannel 36, crowds were compliant.
