CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The constant hum of leaf blowers, the scrape of shovels and the beeping of work trucks signify the ongoing beautification of Charlotte in the days before the Democratic National Convention.

Elias Munoz and his crew of seven from The Metrolina Landscape Company have spent the last month working at the EpiCentre.  Tuesday’s focus included new flowers.

"Put more landscaping on the second floor, just to make it look good in here,” Munoz said.

You name it and Munoz and his crew have done it.

"We did pavers, a little bit of concrete work also,” Munoz said.

Directly across the street in front of The Ritz-Carlton, you’ll find Dan Belcher with Sandtastic carving into a huge pile of sand.

"We're making a sand sculpture, got about 12 tons of sand here,” Belcher said.

Belcher is carving the DNC logo, adding "Welcome to Charlotte" and stars and stripes to his big sandbox.

"We really want to get a simple, clean message here,” Belcher said.  "We do this because it's something we love doing. Shorts and bare feet are great."

All the work is done by hand without prior practice.

Both jobs are under a deadline, both involve crews getting their hands dirty, both involve cleanup and both involve a big sense of pride with thousands of people seeing their work.

"[I] hope people enjoy it,” Belcher said.

Belcher hopes to finish the sand sculpture Tuesday night.

Munoz and his crew plan to finish up at the EpiCentre Wednesday.
