The Republicans held their own party Wednesday night in Weddington.
The event -- called "Rock the Red" -- was moved to Weddington after organizers had a falling out with Bojangles Colliseum.
There was music and food for attendees, and the featured speaker was Sheriff Joe Arpaio from Maricopa County, Arizona, who's known for his tough stance on illegal immigration.
"People play politics all the time, but I think (the president) is playing it a little too far on the immigration situation during the last year, just to gather those Hispanic votes," Arpaio said.
Asked about having the Democratic Convention in Charlotte, state Republican House Speaker Thom Tillis said he was happy to have it here, and he wished the Democrats well in September, but definitely not so much in November.
