CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The first full workday at the temporary transit center in uptown filled as quickly as it opened Tuesday morning.
Charlotte Area Transit System moved the transit center from its normal location across from the Time Warner Cable arena because of security restrictions for the Democratic National Convention.
Third and Mint Streets are closed off to traffic to accommodate the temporary bus bays. All bus transfers that normally take place at the Arena CTC are now routed through the temporary location today and tomorrow.
CATS said it tried to bring all the features of the CTC to the temporary location, including an air-conditioned waiting room, bathrooms, and food vendors.
Kim Taylor of CATS told NewsChannel 36 that anyone taking buses to uptown Tuesday and Wednesday should leave early to compensate for rerouted buses. Travelers should also wear comfortable shoes because the buses won't take them to stops in restricted areas.
Anyone riding the light rail will be required to get off at Stonewall Street. Anyone wishing to connect to a bus route should get off at Carson Street Station.
The temporary transit center is located along 3rd Street at the intersection of Mint Street.
- Look for the signs
Signs will direct you where your bus will be.
- Ask for help
If you can’t find a sign with your bus information, look for someone wearing a bright yellow shirt. They are trained to answer your transit questions.
- Wear your walking shoes
The temporary transit center is the farthest into uptown you can get on a bus. You will have to walk the rest of the way.
- Allow extra time
As the buses are being rerouted, they are taking longer to get to the temporary transit center.
- Light rail
If you are taking light rail and you need to catch a bus, get off at Carson Street to get to the temporary transit center.
