CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Some Charlotte preschoolers are getting a healthy lesson while serving up some treats for DNC visitors.

The pre-school class at Thompson Family Child Development Center is cooking up something special for some DNC guests.  The kids picked from their own garden for their ingredients.

“They thought they were making typical brownies but there’s actually a special ingredient in it—black beans,” said nutrition direction Lauren Iazzetti.

The special ingredient in the muffins they made?  Zuchini from the garden the kids help grow there at the center.

“When you have the children basically growing the items from seed and taking care of them, seeing the items grow, it really gets them super excited. It really helps them with healthy eating and they carry it out through their entire lives,” Iazzetti added.

The kids also donate some of the things from their garden to Friendship Trays, the local non-profit that does Meals on Wheels.

The brownies and muffins are being delivered to some of the independent media that will be in town.
