CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mecklenburg County magistrates won’t conduct marriage ceremonies at the jail or courthouse during the week of the Democratic National Convention, officials said Wednesday.

People will be able to get marriage licenses from the county’s Register of Deeds office from Sept. 4-7. But the county said magistrates won’t be able to conduct marriage ceremonies.

Court officials said earlier this month that they’re temporarily reassigning additional magistrates to Jail North to help deal with an anticipated spike in arrests during the DNC. Six to eight magistrates could work each shift at the arrest processing center, compared to two to four on a typical week.

The county said people who had wanted to get married by a magistrate between Sept. 4 and 7 should consider using magistrates in other cities or make arrangements with a minister, pastor, rabbi or others legally authorized to perform a marriage.
