Driver nearly impaled by pole on interstate

A Virginia man is lucky to be alive after a large steel rod pierced his windshield on Interstate 64.

(WWBT) -- A Richmond, Virginia man says he's lucky to be alive after a metal rod impaled the front of his car, narrowly missing him.

The whole incident happened on Interstate 64 as John Wyatt was approaching the exit for 295, a turn which may have saved his life. A metal rod slammed into the car's windshield, impaling itself through the glass and barely missing Wyatt.

"It was all a matter of three to four seconds," Wyatt said, as he recalled seeing the metal rod fly off the flatbed truck traveling in front of him.

At first, he thought it was a stick of wood.

"The object continued to bounce on 64, and the next thing I knew, it penetrated the windshield. I was on the side of the road and it was next to me in the car," he described.
