Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirms two people, Deborah Bakashika and Ashley Gilliam, died in the crash, and another eight people were taken to the hospital with various injuries. Bakashika was pronounced deceased on the scene, while Gilliam was pronounced at the hospital.
Police say a 2005 Chevy Malibu driven by 20-year-old Demarus Reid was traveling southbound in the left-hand lane of Eastway Drive when it struck the 2002 Honda Odyssey van.
The impact forced the Malibu across the yellow line and into oncoming traffic, striking a Ford Explorer traveling northbound, causing the Malibu to roll over onto its rooftop. Police say four passengers were ejected in the crash.
The vehicle occupants ranged from 7-years-old to 36.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, police say.
