BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Police have unveiled new procedures for setting up checkpoints in hopes of preventing chases, like the one that ended in a deadly crash that killed a former mayor and his passenger.
In the dashcam video, obtained by the I-team, a driver who blew through a checkpoint and was being chased by police, hit them.
The revised policies require at least three officers to be at a checkpoint with their dashcams pointed in a way that captures nearly every angle of the area.
Belmont Police Chief Charlie Franklin explained, “If the driver's approaching and you can get video of the driver and a tag number, you may not have to pursue that vehicle.”
Belmont Police have not changed their chase policy, but they did recently clarify that policy with officers.
