ROCKINGHAM, N.C. -- Police said Monday morning they are continuing to investigate reports that street racing played a role in the Saturday night crash that killed a 9-year-old boy in Richmond County.

The victim, identified by police as Jody Williams, died when the car being driven by his grandmother on Business U.S. 74 in Rockingham was struck by another vehicle.

The grandmother, Emma Williams, was hospitalized with serious injuries. She is expected to survive, police say.

According to police, Emma Williams pulled her car from a parking lot on Business U.S. 74 about 9 p.m., when her vehicle was broadsided. Witnesses told police the car responsible for the crash was racing another vehicle. Police say the driver that struck Williams’ car did not stop at the scene.

The crash occurred near the 900 block of Business U.S. 74, in a stretch of roadway lined by businesses and apartments.

Several media outlets reported Sunday evening that Rockingham police had questioned a man in the case, but police said Monday that no charges have been filed.

Jody Williams was a student at West Rockingham Elementary School.
