CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- While still in the early stages, Charlotte is on a list of 20 North American places that could host ESPN's X Games starting in 2014.
Charlotte would like to host the summer games and a group is ready to make a proposal to try to lure the games to the Queen City. The X Games has grown in reputation and is for athletes of extreme or action sports to compete on a national stage annually.
ESPN announced that Charlotte is one of the cities on the list, which includes other locations like New York, Atlanta and Austin. Tough competition but fans of the games said that Charlotte would be a great place to have the event.
"That would be amazing--really excited to see that Charlotte is in the running for that," said Josh Frazier, the owner of Black Sheep Skate Shop in Charlotte's South End. "Especially the economic impact of having an event like that come to town would be great."
If Charlotte is successful in its attempts to get the summer games it would be a huge financial windfall for our area, said Scott Cooper of the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
"We'd likely try to utilize a lot of the facility but of course it’s going to be regional so this could be something that could be a great plus for not only the speedway but for the region as a whole," Cooper noted.
ESPN wants formal proposals from cities on the list by April 2.
