TEGA CAY, S.C. -- Neighbors in Tega Cay are upset about a leak in a sewer system that was discovered last weekend just yards from the shore of Lake Wylie.

"The manhole cover had sewage bubbling out of it," said Linda Stevenson, a resident of Tega Cay for the past 17 years. "And it ran down the hill and went into the lake."

The company stopped the leak and one man -- who did not want to be identified -- said he saw crews pull out a big piece of wood that might have been blocking the pipe.

Utilities Inc. is the parent company of Tega Cay Water Service that provides water and sewers in the area of Tega Cay. The company has put in new lift stations in some locations but residents say the problems like this last spill continue to happen.

"Spill after spill. Oh, they say, 'We promise we are going to fix it. We get another rate hike and this is going to fix all your problems for you,'" said Stevenson.

Another resident, Joyce Clark said, "It's horrible, just horrible."

Stevenson, Clark and many other residents will tell you they moved here because of the tranquil setting on the lake. Now they wonder what spills like this last one are doing to that precious resource.

"What about fisherman that are out there catching fish? They have no idea sewage has been dumped. And in the summer do I really want to swim in this water," asked Stevenson.

NBC Charlotte tried by phone and email to reach Tega Cay Water Service for a comment but the company did not respond Tuesday.
