CONCORD, N.C. -- Police say a Kannapolis teen was caught damaging grave markers in a Concord cemetery Thursday morning.

Officers arrived at 11:30 a.m. at the city-owned Oakwood Cemetary at 461 Church Street North to find 19-year-old Afdal Azam Ali Leach damaging the cemetery, police said.

"Officers arrived and confronted the man who was found to be armed with an axe and a machete. The man complied with commands from officers and was taken into custody without incident," said Deputy Chief Allen Overcash in a statement.

About 75 grave markers were damaged, and police said they are working to notify the families affected by the incident.

Leach was charged with four felony counts of defacing or desecrating a grave site, and more charges are expected.

In June at the same site, a bronze angel was stolen from the grave site of special needs child who had passed away.  It's unclear if the two incidents are related.
