SALISBURY, N.C. -- A late night single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a Salisbury man on Saturday.

North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Dootey tells NBC Charlotte that 54-year-old David Lewis Wood, of Salisbury, ran his dark brown Mercury Mountaineer off the roadway and down a steep embankment.

The impact was severe, officials say, and Wood did not survive the wreck.

Because of the steep embankment and the dark of night, Wood's vehicle was not spotted until Sunday morning when a passerby called authorities.

Residents nearby reported hearing a "loud boom" around 10:45 Sunday night; officials believe that to be the time of the accident.

Dootey says Wood was traveling northbound on U.S. 601 near Young Road.
