YORK COUNTY, S.C. -- A nine-year-old girl and her grandmother were shot and killed in York County Friday, and investigators say her grandfather pulled the trigger.
Friday morning around 10:30, the York County Sheriff's Office responded to the shooting scene in the 800 block of Idlewild Road in Rock Hill. Officers responded to the home after a 911 hang-up.
Authorities say two people have died from injuries sustained in the shooting, and one other victim, the suspect, was taken to Piedmont Medical Center.
The deceased are 71-year-old Barbara Gregory and nine-year-old Mia Rodgers.
It is a mystery that is both stunning and sad to people in this tranquil York County neighborhood. "What did a 10-year-old girl do to deserve to die, they're innocent," neighbor Phil Thurston said.
Another neighbor, Deborah Hovis, said, "Everybody in the neighborhood that i talked to has been really upset adn shocked, in shock.
The York County Sheriff's Office says the suspect is Ronald Fred Gregory, 67. Authorities did not have an update on his condition.
Hovis said, "I don't know, I know she's been an invalid for a couple of years. I have no idea what happened to make him do something so drastic."
Neighbors told NBC Charlotte that Barbara fell and broke both legs a few years ago, leaving her husband to care for her and their granddaughter.
"He had just had a sun porch added out on back with a ramp so she could come out."
They say the couple was raising their grandchild and there was no indication anything was wrong.
"I had no hint that anybody was this desperate, I don't know anybody in the neighborhood did."
Charges have not yet been filed.
