CHARLOTTE, NC -- More than eighty delays had been reported at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport by 6pm Tuesday, according flight tracking website Flightaware.com.  High winds caused a brief ground stop between 5pm-6pm.

Departure and arrival boards in the terminal indicated a storm system sweeping across the country's eastern half seemed to impact mostly arriving flights.

"Our flight was cancelled yesterday with USAir, and we had a layover, and we kinda wanna get home, we've been gone for a week now," said passenger Randy Novak.

Airport officials warned passengers to plan ahead. Tuesday and Wednesday were expected to be the two busiest travel days of the week.

"It's really imperative that travelers get here 2 hours before there flight, and make sure they are prepped and ready to go," said Victoria Ramburg with Travelocity.com.

It took people, including NBC Charlotte crews, more than an hour just to drive to the airport from BIlly Graham Parkway. Long lines and even longer wait times forced some travelers to dump their cars and walk through the rain nearly a mile just to make their flights.

Also on Tuesday, CMPD said officers responded to dozens of crashes.  There have been no reports of serious injuries.
