Elderly SC man who got tasered receives $900,000 settlement

The town of Kingstree reached a $900,000 settlement in the October incident where officers tased 86-year-old Albert Chatfield.

Kingstree, SC (WLTX)  -A settlement has been reached in a case where Kingstree Police used a taser on a 86-year-old man. The town agreed to pay Albert Chatfield's family $900,000.

The October 16 incident was caught on dashcam. Chatfield's attorneys say he was driving moments before the video starts, he became disoriented and police officers pulled his car over. Chatfield got out of his vehicle and began backing away from officers. When he did not stop, an officer used his taser.

Attorney's for Chatfield sued, saying Chatfield never put the officers in danger or threatened them and they violated his rights. His attorneys say when he fell to the pavement, he hit his head and suffered severe injuries that put him in ICU for weeks.

The town of Kingstree police chief tells News19 he is unable to comment on the settlement or the department's policy on when they use tasers because the case is still under SLED investigation.

The town posted the following statement on Facebook: "On October 19, 2017, Kingstree Police Officers responded to a call regarding a difficult situation with Mr. Albert Chatfield. We are aware that Mr. Chatfield sustained unforeseen and unintended injuries during this incident. We are sorry that he was injured. As you are aware, we have reached a resolution of all legal claims by or on behalf of Mr. Chatfield quickly. This matter is still under investigation by SLED. We do not want to interfere in that investigation and because of that, we cannot comment further."

SLED says they have received the letter from the solicitor that no charges will be brought, and are in the process of closing the file.
