CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Actor Rick Schroder says he was happy to accept an invitation to a Veterans Day ceremony at Harvard University honoring 16 alumni who were Medal of Honor recipients.

After all, Schroder portrayed one of them, Lt. Col. Charles W. Whittlesey, in the 2001 TV film "Lost Battalion."

A veterans alumni group reached out to Schroder because they couldn't locate any family members of Whittlesey, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1918.

Whittlesey commanded one of two World War I battalions that spent five days cut off inside enemy lines, surrounded by German troops. He was twice wounded, but refused to surrender and eventually led his surviving troops out of the forest.

Schroder, who is currently living in Spain, said portraying Whittlesey was a fantastic opportunity.
