Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only - not the street or sidewalk.
Use the microwave to cook small meals. (It uses less power than an oven.)
Purchase "Green Power" for your home's electricity. (Contact your power supplier to see where and if it is available.)
Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher; wash only full loads.
Cut back on air conditioning and heating use if you can.
Turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Navy says it won't build a practice jet landing field near a wildlife reserve in eastern North Carolina.
Environmentalists, state officials and local residents had opposed the site that straddles Beaufort and Washington counties.
Jennifer Alligood is a leader of one the groups who opposed the site. Alligood says the hard work of the past six years has paid off and shows grass roots efforts can be successful.
The 50,000-acre location was originally the Navy's preferred site for the 8,000-foot runway for fliers to practice aircraft carrier landings.
The Navy yesterday reduced its list of finalists from 22 to five. That includes three sites in Virginia and two other sites in North Carolina, one in Gates County and the other in Camden and Currituck counties.
