New regulations for Harrisburg developers
HARRISBURG, N.C. -- If you plan on developing in the town of Harrisburg, there are new requirements. A storm water ordinance went into effect on Jan. 1. This is federally and state mandated and it’s up to the individual towns to pay for it.
Derek Slocum, the town engineer, tells us there are no developments that fall under the current storm water ordinance. But the next developer who wants to break ground will have to follow the new requirements. Some of these are a more intense review of plans developers submit. It could cost developers more money.
One big change is more Best Management Practices or BMP’s will have to be installed. A detention pond is an example of a BMP. It slows down all of the storm water runoff from the roof of a building. All the rain water eventually goes into creeks and lakes. That’s why it’s important for all of us to remember only rain goes down the storm drain.
