What Can You Do Right Now?

Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only - not the street or sidewalk.

Use the microwave to cook small meals. (It uses less power than an oven.)

Purchase "Green Power" for your home's electricity. (Contact your power supplier to see where and if it is available.)

Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher; wash only full loads.

Cut back on air conditioning and heating use if you can.

Turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- This week is National Flood Safety Awareness Week.

A federal program called National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) offers communities flood insurance and flood protection.

Jim Burke, Natural Resources Extension Agent with Gaston County says, “There is a federal legislation that requires any regulated lender that provides inside a home that is located in a flood plain. They are required to get flood insurance for that property for the life of that mortgage.”

Flood plain maps are available for each community. It is possible that the home you live in now could be in a flood plain without you knowing it because of the recent re-zoning.

You are eligible to participate in the NFIP if your county of municipality participates in a flood management plan administered by FEMA.

To find out more about NFIP and to see if your home is at risk for potential flooding, visit www.floodsmart.gov. You can also visit www.centralina.org to go to your county or town’s website.
