What Can You Do Right Now?

Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only - not the street or sidewalk.

Use the microwave to cook small meals. (It uses less power than an oven.)

Purchase "Green Power" for your home's electricity. (Contact your power supplier to see where and if it is available.)

Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher; wash only full loads.

Cut back on air conditioning and heating use if you can.

Turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room.

New flood plain maps

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. -- A flood plain is an area that has a certain percent chance for flooding. The city or town you live in has a flood plain map to tell you if you are at risk.

Late this year the town of Indian Trail is going to be adopting new flood plain maps. If you live in Indian Trail there could be a chance you will be on a flood plain even if you aren’t right now.

Katie Reeves, senior planner with Indian Trail says, “Flood plains have gone down but there are some homes that are in a flood plain that weren’t in a flood plain before from the 1994 maps.”

If you live in a flood plain, flood insurance is mandatory. But Reeves says it’s even a good idea to look into this type of insurance even if you live out of flood plain limits.

“Some recent statistics that we found was that one-third of homes that were flooded this year were not even in a flood plain,” Reeves says.

Flood plain maps are available for each community. It’s a good idea to investigate it now before a strong storm hits.
