Lake Lure evacuations lifted, donations pour in

Evacuation orders and road closures have been lifted in Lake Lure.

LAKE LURE, N.C. -- Evacuation orders and road closures were lifted Monday afternoon in Lake Lure.

Emergency crews say they finally feel optimistic about keeping the wildfire there contained.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames at 7100 acres all weekend and all day Monday despite very strong winds.

Meanwhile, donations poured in for emergency crews and displaced residents.

“It’s unreal, you don’t think about something like this happening so close to your home,” said Amanda Rutherford, who is overseeing donations at Rutherford Life Services. “Even though we do have a high unemployment rate, there are lots of giving people who want to help however they can.”

Since crews were able to keep the fire from growing, people who live in the area are now allowed to return to their homes.

“We are feeling really good like we’ve turned the corner with the weather,” Tim Engray with the NC Forest Service said Monday.

Still, hundreds of firefighters will have to work through the holidays to monitor the fire. More than 900 were still on site Monday.

“We’re going into Thanksgiving, so I’m sure there will be some that are missing home, and families are missing them, as well,” Engray said. “But to feel that support from the community, it makes it all worthwhile.”
