No boat? No problem! Enjoy local lakes on a paddleboard this summer

You don't need a boat to have fun on the lake. There are plenty of other great ways to hit the water to beat the heat this summer.

LAKE NORMAN, N.C. -- Summer is here! So, it's time to check out all the Charlotte area has to offer, including our gorgeous lakes.

Guess what? You don't even need to have a boat to enjoy the water. Cue, Paddle boarding.

Jackie Shomaker is an expert when it comes to stand up paddling. She moved to North Carolina seven years ago, tried stand up paddling, and got hooked. Now she instructs paddlers of all skill levels at My Aloha Paddle and Surf in Cornelius.

“It’s just a great way to be out in nature,” Shomaker says. “I love to be on the water and this is like the closest you can get.”

My Aloha offers everything. From beginner lessons, to paddleboard yoga, and moonlight paddles.

“It just takes practice,” Shomaker says. “The more you do it, the better you get, the easier it becomes and the more daring you get, and you end up doing headstands on the board.”

So challenge yourself. You never know what you might accomplish on the water. Group paddleboard lessons are $35 per person for an hour. Individual lessons are $55 an hour.
