The ice cream diet: Too good to be true?

Is it really possible to lose weight eating only ice cream?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Celery, kale, carrots and…ice cream?

It’s the Facebook post that started a hefty conversation. A Men’s Health contributor screaming the virtues of scooping your way to weight loss, praising a blogger who, in just a month and a half, lose more than 20 pounds eating mostly ice cream.

So we asked some experts at Carolinas Healthcare System if the decadent diet that sounds too good to be true is really too good to be true.

“If we look at the math, yes I believe that you can lose weight just by doing that,” said Jennifer Lowrie, a registered dietician with CHS. If I take in fewer calories than what I expend, I will lose weight so that’s what this guy is trying to prove — that it’s all about calories, it doesn’t matter where the calories come from — it’s all about the number.”

But is a scoop of ice cream with 210 calories really the same as 210 calories of a wholesome lunch?

“It’s more than that,” Lowrie said. “Eating ice cream all day every day you’ll be missing out on so many vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbohydrates.”

And here’s the kicker: Lowrie says most of us don’t need to change a lot about our current eating habits to lose weight. In fact, she says if we only changed this one thing, we’d be guaranteed to drop 10 pounds.Lowrie says most of us don’t need to change a lot about our current eating habits to lose weight. “What you were eating is just fine. It’s just how much you were eating,” Lowrie said. “I see a lot of people eating very healthy, just too much of it.”
