CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they are counting on the public to help bring in a fugitive who they can't find.
The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team has run out of leads in their search for Robert King, even though they are convinced he is still here, hiding in Charlotte.
He is someone the police know well, but can't put their hands on.
"We think there's people out there that may know where he is or living," said Sgt. Steve Winterhalter with VCAT.
He hesitates to use the term but calls King a cold case because the VCAT team has run out of places to look for him.
Winterhalter said, "Maybe somebody who knows him as something else or sees him every day that doesn't know he’s wanted."
King, who police say is a known drug dealer, is wanted for another gun offense.
"When you're using and selling drugs and carrying firearms, often we'll see an escalation of violence. That's what we’re trying to prevent," said Winterhalter.
It's one of the things that VCAT has focused on in recent months.
"We do so many cases that involve handguns and shootings. There is a common thread -- prior weapons charges. If we're able to intervene and get them picked up once they’re declared a felon and caught with a firearm, then we can get them and try to prevent that next violent act," said Winterhalter.
So finding King, with a rap sheet filled with drug and gun violations, is a priority.
King is 29 years old, 5-feet-6 and weighs about 185 pounds.
Police believe he may be hiding in the University area or The Plaza.
If you have any information on King's whereabouts, call VCAT at 704-336-8228.
