Students learn about swine flu prevention

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools launched an all out assault on H1N1 Thursday and it started with some high school students who realized just how dangerous this virus can be to young people.

An H1N1 fairy visited Selwyn Elementary School.

"If no tissue is available, cough into your shirt sleeve like so," the fairy demonstrated.

It was followed with a skit and a song in an effort to get the attention of students like Shelby Harkey.

"I already knew it was really bad for you … and that you just needed to wash your hands a lot," Harkey said.

But there's so much more to fighting H1N1.

A video was shown on every elementary campus and a skit was done for fifth graders at Selwyn Elementary School.

Both are the work of Myers Park High School's international baccalaureate council. Their concern: schools, no matter the grade, can be hotbed for spreading germs.

The teens are teaching prevention, showing the most effective way to something basic like washing your hands.

The Mecklenburg County Health Department also helped with this project, but the teens came up with the slogan H1N1 for no one.
