CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A student from Bradley Middle School has been diagnosed with pertussis, also known as whooping cough.
Pertussis is a contagious bacterial infection spread by coughing.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials said the principal sent a Connect-Ed message, alerting families about the case.
The Mecklenburg County Health Department also sent a letter home with students, explaining the risks of whooping cough.
CMS said most children receive the pertussis vaccine, called TDAP, before age 7. All students are required to have the shot before starting sixth grade.
