CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte woman fighting a rare disease got a surprise, from a genie.

On Friday morning, NewsChannel 36 met a woman named Sally who is fighting a rare brain disorder.  Her daily routine of dealing with the ailment took a wonderful turn, when Joshua Dawson showed up unexpectedly to take her on a day filled with fun.

NewsChannel 36  first met Dawson last year when he was in the Queen City.  He has a very personal reason for trying to grant wishes.

“The reason I'm doing this is that my father passed away from cancer when he was only 53 years old,” Dawson said.  "I never had a chance to take him on a day like this, so when I do these dream days I actually live vicariously through the people I surprise.  I feel like my father is by my side.”

That’s why he dresses up like a genie, and surprises people like Sally.   Friday morning’s surprise actually turned into a daylong affair.

The “genie” treated her to a day at the spa, a helicopter ride, and then topped it all off by introducing her Monday night to pop star Mary J. Blige.

Sally says the ‘genie’ had a strong impact on her.

“I’m so filled with gratitude,” she said, “I want to be able to turn around and do something for somebody else.”
