CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Students at six Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools received the H1N1 vaccine on Monday.
At Billingsville Elementary School, students received a stuffed animal keychain while waiting for their vaccinations.
Mecklenburg County health officials set up several tables in the school's gymnasium, where nurses administered the vaccines.
"We are excited today," said school nurse Afia Asamoa. "We had so many parents who sent in consent forms."
Billingsville school officials said they expected to give vaccinations to around 300 students, which is more than half its student body.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools plan to have H1N1 vaccines clinics at six schools everyday starting Monday and running until they have visited all campuses in the district. The process could take as long as January to complete.
Also this Monday, students were vaccinated at Hidden Valley and J.H. Gunn elementary schools and Amay James, Starmount and Tryon Hills Pre-K centers.
