RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- State health officials say a Wilson County resident has died from West Nile virus, the first death and confirmed case in North Carolina this year.
A statement from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services didn't identify the victim.
West Nile virus is one of several mosquito-borne viruses common to North Carolina. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 696 cases of West Nile virus nationwide through Sept. 10. There have been 28 deaths.
Through the same period last year, officials reported 2,636 cases.
DHHS recommends eliminating standing water in places like flower pots, discarded containers, gutters and kiddie pools. The agency also suggests wearing long sleeves, pants and socks while outdoors when weather permits.
