CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An estimated 1.5 million North Carolinians will soon be shopping around for health insurance.
On October 1st, the healthcare marketplace established as part of the “Affordable Care Act,” begins open enrollment.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is the largest provider in the state, and is one of two companies individuals can choose from.
BCBS offers coverage for residents in all 100 counties. Coventry Health Care of the Carolinas is available in about 80 counties state-wide.
BCBS has opened several stores in the state, hiring hundreds of additional workers in preparation.
Agent Dwayne Wilson, has been in the insurance business for almost 30 years. He helps answer questions at the Hickory store location, and says anyone can come in at no cost to speak to an agent face-to-face.
“It’s the same price if you buy on the internet, or on the phone,” he said.
“The biggest questions are about rates, do I qualify for subsidies, and those are questions we can help with because everyone’s needs are individual and customized.”
Pre-existing conditions will not factor into the cost of care, and you cannot be denied coverage. Wilson says BCBS offers 26 different types of plans, from “Platinum,” down to the basic “Bronze” plan.
“The peace of mind is that there is no waiting period, no pre-existing and health questions. It’s just mapping a plan to fir your needs and your budget.”
Wilson anticipates higher demand for their services in the coming weeks. He suggests customers make an appointment after October first for their convenience.
Other options will be to go directly online to the government’s healthcare website.
Trained “navigators” and personnel are also available at a number of social service agencies.
