CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Tuesday marks the first day of open enrollment for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

North and South Carolina did not set up their own marketplace website, so those who enroll will use the federal exchange site.

There are four levels of coverage: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. All differ in coverage, deductibles and co pays.

However, the process is confusing for some and there are local organizations available to help. The Matthews Free Medical Center will be training applications counselors to assist.

"The best advice that I can give somebody and our patients is not to panic. They have several months that they can enroll and today is prob very hectic for the website and people making appointments, so they can relax, take their time as we start to enroll people," according to Amy Car with the Matthews Medical Center.

People have until December 15th to enroll to have coverage start on January 1st.  However, enrollment continues through March 31st.

Some other organizations that can help with enrollment include North Carolina MedAssist, Legal Services of the Southern Piedmont and C.W. Willaims Community Health Center.

As for the enrollment website itself, healthcare.gov, some users are reporting some glitches, however officials say that's to be expected.
