CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- This week, you have the chance to clean out your medicine cabinet safely. 

Operation Medicine Drop is under way in Mecklenburg County.

The goal is to dispose of expired medications to reduce the risk that they'll fall into the wrong hands or end up in the public water supply.

Now through Friday, the Mecklenburg County ABC Board Law Enforcement Division will be collecting medications at five CVS pharmacies.

On Sunday, collections will be taken at several Harris Teeter locations.
