FORT MILL, S.C. -- A fox spread rabies to one person in the Fort Mill area, according to the Department of Health and Environmental control.

The fox tested positive for the disease, and the patient is now undergoing treatment.

Most rabies cases come from wild animals following a bite or scratch, but domestic animals can contract rabies as well. People should avoid contact with wild animals, even if they seem tame.

There were 124 confirmed cases of rabies in 2013.

Anyone who might have been exposed should immediately wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical treatment. This is the sixth animal to test positive for rabies this year.
