Elementary students benefit from in-class yoga

Some Charlotte third graders are receiving benefits from in-class yoga.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Don’t be offended if Mrs. Jodi McKay’s third grade class doesn’t get up. They’re getting their yoga on.

For five weeks, these third graders have been exploring the ancient practice, and believe it or not, they’re getting pretty good at it.

“We had about a week of sillies, where they laughed at all of it, the poses were goofy, the activities were silly,” said Mrs. McKay.

Since then, these 9- and 10-year-olds have learned to look inward. Something their age group isn’t exactly known for.

The teachers turned to yoga after class discipline became a problem. It hasn’t totally wiped that out, but at least everyone feels a little better about it.

“We’re starting to see some incremental changes and we’ve been doing it five weeks,” McKay said. “By the end of the year, we’re going to see some kids who can be more reflective.”

The kids practice their poses 30 minutes a day, five days a week. But they say you shouldn’t even try yoga if you aren’t going to take it seriously.

“You have to be calm, you have to be serious with it,” said one student. “Focus on one thing and don’t focus on anything else.”

Take their advice and you too may find yourself calm and centered. It worked for these kids, at least for a little while.
