How far can you drive after your gas gauge hits empty?

Do you really know how far the gas in your tank will get you when you hit the road? To find out, we had WKYC's consumer investigator Danielle Serino give it a try to see how long she could drive after the gas gauge hit empty.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WKYC) -- Nearly 90 percent of people traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday will be driving, with the average long-distance trip at 214 miles.

But do you really know how far the gas in your tank will get you when you hit the road?

To find out, NBC Charlotte's sister station WKYC sent consumer investigator Danielle Serino to give it a try.

She and producer Chris Cantergiani rented a 2017 Nissan Sentra that was filled with a quarter tank of gas.

The gauge declared they could drive 122 miles before needing to refuel.

But how far were they able to drive AFTER the gauge hit empty?
