CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The fired director of Mecklenburg County’s Department of Social Services has issued a three-page statement to our news partners at The Charlotte Observer.
DSS Director Mary Wilson says the county manager asked her to resign on Thursday, August 30 or face termination.
But Wilson says County Manager Harry Jones did not give her any specific reasons and she refused to quit.
The manager fired Wilson five days later.
Wilson says she has given notice that she plans to appeal to an employee review panel.
A county spokesman said Wilson has 10 days to file the appeal and she has not yet filed the formal paperwork.
Wilson used her letter to recount her successes in four years as DSS Director but no one has said the manager fired her.
The complete letter is posted on the Observer’s website. It was sent by email. An Observer editor said Wilson has not answered questions sent to her and said in the letter, “I do not wish to fight this in the press.”
