Person found dead after fire in Gastonia

Firefighters saw light smoke coming from the back of the structure. Firefighters were able to put out the small fire in the crawl space of the structure.

GASTONIA, N.C. -- The Gastonia Fire Department and Gastonia Police are investigating after a person was found dead in a vacant building following a fire on Saturday afternoon.

According to Gastonia Fire, crews responded to a structure fire on the 200 block of south Oakland Street in Gastonia, around 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Firefighters saw light smoke coming from the back of the structure. Crews were able to put out a small fire in the crawl space of the structure.

One person was found in the crawl space. Gastonia Fire says the structure had been vacant for over a year.

The scene is under investigation by the Fire Department Task Force and Gastonia Police.
