LINCOLNTON, N.C. -- A man riding a stolen ATV was seriously injured and a second man was arrested following an early Thursday morning chase in Lincolnton.
Two Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies were in a church parking on Salem Road around 3 a.m. when they saw an ATV followed closely by a car traveling south on Salem Road.
The officers went to investigate and the two vehicles attempted to flee. When deputies caught up with the vehicles the car pulled over but the ATV continued on Salem Road.
Near the intersection of the Country Club Road the ATV, which had run off the road, came back onto the roadway and struck one of the deputies patrol cars, according to the police report.
The man continued to flee the deputies before striking a culvert ejecting the driver off the vehicle.
Johnathan Heath Williams, 26, was transported to CMC-Lincoln with head injuries then airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The driver of the car James Allen Harris, 50, was arrested later on Generals Boulevard in Lincolnton.
He is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license are suspended or revoked, possession of a controlled substance and traffic violations.
He is in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.
The ATV was reported stolen around 9 a.m. today. A man told investigators that the 4-wheeler was taken from his garage on Keener Road.
The accident is under investigation by the State Highway Patrol.
