UNION COUNTY, N.C. – A North Carolina man was killed when police say a tractor-trailer sped through a red light and plowed into a truck Wednesday morning in Union County.

The wreck took place at 8:40 a.m. at the intersection of NC 218 and NC 200.

An 18 wheeler approached a red light and did not slow down, striking a plumbing pick-up truck, according to officials.

The driver of the plumbing truck, Larry Mitchell Smith of Stanfield, was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte but later died.  A passenger in the pick-up was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 70-year-old Albert Grantham of Wilmington, has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
