CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A woman was hit and killed on Interstate 85 Friday morning.
The incident happened around 8 on I-85 south at Billy Graham Parkway.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a woman walked into the left lane of I-85 southbound traffic.
Investigators say several cars slammed on brakes to avoid the woman, but one vehicle did not stop in time.
A man at the scene told NBC Charlotte that his nephew, a local minister, was driving the SUV that hit the woman. He said his nephew told him the woman jumped in front of the vehicle.
Police said they got several calls of a woman trying to climb the median on I-85 prior to her being hit.
CMPD and the North Carolina Highway Patrol have closed two lanes on I-85 while they investigate the incident.
